Satomi Japanese Dogwood is a lovely specimen tree for the landscape. A late spring bloomer, it will rejuvenate your garden when other spring bloomers are starting to fade. Satomi Kousa Dogwood tree exhibits a divine display of numerous, large (up to 4 inches), star-shaped, white to deep pink blooms. The "blooms" are actually showy, pointed, pink bracts encircling a cluster of small yellow true flowers. Nectar-rich, these blooms attract pollinators. Mature trees can reach up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Train as a tree or shrub. Cornus kousa 'Satomi' won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. It's four season interest makes it a wonderful shrub / tree in the garden. The ovate foliage emerges as the flowers fade, giving your dogwood a lush, summertime appearance. In the fall, the foliage will turn striking, scarlet red. The faded blooms will give way to dazzling, classic, raspberry-like, light-red fruits that will remain on the tree until the fall. These little treats will attract birds into your garden. Satomi Dogwood has a low canopy created by a horizontally inclined, multi-branched growth habit. In winter, it will drop its leaves and reveal its grey bark. The bark of mature shrubs will exfoliate and draw attention during winter. Satomi Japanese Dogwood is hardy to USDA zone 5a (-29 °C). It prefers to grow in full sun to partial shade, and in well-drained, moist soil. It will not tolerate standing water. This outstanding pink Kousa Dogwood can be used as a hedge, in masses, as a specimen, or in big containers.
